SolarCity has announced a smart energy homes demonstration project in partnership with the SunSpec Alliance and Southern California Edison, where SolarCity will install rooftop solar PV, batteries, controllable thermostats, and smart inverters on 50 homes in the Southern California Edison territory. The team will demonstrate how smart energy homes, combining numerous distributed technologies, can be deployed and aggregated to advance the electric grid.

A $4 million (£2.6m) smart energy homes pilot project has been launched in California.Around 50 householders will have solar, storage, controllable thermostats and smart inverters installed in their homes.The project, which was awarded $2 million (£1.3m) by the California Energy Commission, is a partnership between SolarCity and SunSpec Alliance and Southern California Edison.

Someday, grid batteries will come in standard packages, ready to be plugged in as fast as utilities can find places and use cases for them. At least, that’s how utility Southern California Edison would like its next round of energy storage systems to be delivered.Under a groundbreaking request for proposals (RFP) issued this week, SCE is calling for battery vendors to build “pre-engineered” storage systems, between 1 megawatt-hours and 16 megawatt-hours in size, that can be built, shipped, installed and up and running within 7 months of being contracted.

More than 50 million smart meters have been deployed in the United States to date, with Southern California Edison responsible for about five million units in its service territory.

Now that the billing functions have been fully implemented, utilities like SCE are looking at the next step for smart meters — specifically, how the data being harvested can help to improve operational efficiencies.

“The message now is that utilities are looking to leverage other facets of the smart meter for operational benefits,” says Marshall Parsons, Manager of Grid Edge Solutions within Southern California Edison’s Advanced Technologies Division.
