Verizon Wireless just launched SmartHub, a 4G LTE router (hot spot) and home-automation hub that shuns wired broadband for an all-cellular connection. The product is at odds with the Z-Wave-enabled Quantum gateways offered by Verizon FiOS.It’s complicated: The two Verizon units operate autonomously.

Verizon says that it will focus on “developing new markets,” as the telco giant was just able to keep revenues on the uptick.The US carrier said that it would be shifting a focus over towards the internet of things (IoT) and its content market in the coming months, as it looks to bolster sagging revenues in other parts of its business.

Why not smart grid applications?That’s the latest vision of Verizon’s Internet of Things division, which has become far more aggressive in the past several years when it comes to developing services focused on several industries, including energy and utility companies.
