Silicon Labs (NASDAQ: SLAB) announced the acquisition of Telegesis, a leading supplier of wireless mesh networking modules based on Silicon Labs’ market-leading ZigBee® technology. A privately held company founded in 1998 and based near London, Telegesis has established itself as a ZigBee expert with strong momentum in the smart energy market, providing ZigBee module solutions to many of the world’s top smart metering manufacturers.

Two new LTE modems have been launched which are designed specifically to improve device connectivity to the IoT.Qualcomm Technologies’ latest model, the MDM9207-1 and MDM9206, will support reliable, optimised cellular connectivity to a growing array of devices and IoT systems, according to the vendor, a subsidiary of chip maker Qualcomm.The MDM9207-1 model is purpose-built for situations where reliable, low power gadgets connect to cloud services. The main application of this modem will be in smart metering, security, asset tracking, wearables, point-of-sale and industrial automation, says the vendor. Among the customisable features this model offers are Category 1 LTE connectivity and features to optimise power and throughput.

Concepts behind the smart grid are growing to tackle an electric power grid system that has changed very little in the 130 years or so of its existence. There is ample room for modernization efforts, to say the least. An updated grid would better be able to take advantage of smart metering and manage data and information, and better able to optimize energy coming from a wider variety of sources.

Verizon recently announced its Grid Wide Utility Solutions, a new Internet of Things platform service that is designed to offer utility companies an easy on-ramp to grid modernization. Available in the U.S., Grid Wide is intended to offer electric utility companies an integrated solution for smart metering, demand response, meter data management and distribution monitoring and control.

At Tuesday’s New York Energy Week Smart Grid Roundtable discussion, experts from various perspectives talked about how smart metering and new data sources are changing power grid operations, customer engagement and revenue structures. Price signals are key to altering customer behavior with regard to energy consumption, but a smart meter alone may not be enough to advance many of the lofty goals promised by the smart grid or microgrids.
