Eurasian countries will invest $18.3 billion in electric grid modernization — or smart grid — over the next decade, according to a new report from Northeast Group, LLC. The region has strong drivers for smart grid investment, a number of experienced vendors and significant funding available from multilateral lending organizations. Near-term growth will be focused in Central Asian countries currently battling high electricity losses, and larger countries such as Russia are expected to develop in the medium term.

Water scarcity is a growing global problem that will only continue to get more severe. In fact, 38 percent of all water produced in emerging market countries is lost to leakage from poor infrastructure, waste, and theft. Smart infrastructure aimed at addressing this problem could prove to be the most significant solution to water scarcity and has the potential to save $12.3 billion each year if fully implemented, according to Northeast Group research.

Electric utilities in the U.S. are struggling with a number of challenges related to EVs, from determining which infrastructure upgrades may be required on their distribution systems to assessing which tariff structures are most effective. As the first wave of EVs hits the US market, utilities have begun launching EV tariffs. Northeast Group first published its benchmark and analysis of these EV tariffs and their implications for utilities and EV owners in July 2011. This second volume of the benchmark includes EV tariffs from 14 new utilities, as well as additional analysis of the implications of these tariffs.
