If smart grid technology is the path to a greener, more efficient, and reliable power system, then communications technologies can be thought of as the highway that will lead the industry there. And where the road was once narrow, unpaved, and reached only critical substations, today it is being widened and extended to reach all the way to customer premises, as well as accommodate many more and larger travelers (data and applications) moving at ever higher speeds.

For many, energy bills are getting more and more expensive, fast becoming an extra financial burden when times are already tough. According to the U.K.’s Department of Energy and Climate Change, the average standard credit bill for electricity in England and Wales in 2014 was £616 ($946) in 2014, up from £599 a year earlier and £561 in 2012.California based Sunverge is looking to transform the way we consume energy, making it cheaper and greener. Their Solar Integration System (SIS) is described by the company as an, “intelligent distributed energy storage system that captures solar power and delivers it when needed most.”

What technologies will have the most impact on making cars greener and transportation more sustainable–and provide that impact fastest?

Suppose that the key isn’t plug-in electric cars, but in fact connecting cars to each other and to the infrastructure around them–making traffic flow vastly more efficiently?

That’s the controversial thesis put forward by John DeCicco in a recent post on the University of Michigan’s sustainability blog, perplexingly titled “Of Carts and Horses, Cars and Smarts.”

Range anxiety. With the growing importance of electric cars in an urban-centric, eco-friendly age, these words have become unlikely bedfellows. They signify a condition common to drivers who shun the internal combustion engine in favour of greener transport.
