Dallas regulated power line company Oncor won $3.5 million in federal funding on Tuesday for a smart grid project.
The award comes weeks after Oncor lost the competition for a major stimulus grant for advanced meters.

Avista (NYSE: AVA) will lead a smart grid demonstration project that will create the first “smart community” in the Pacific Northwest. Matching funds for the $38 million project are part of a U.S. Department of Energy grant for a larger $178 million regional project which is administered by Battelle.
Avista will team up with several regional entities for the Pullman, Wash., project. Participants include the City of Pullman, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Washington State University, Itron, Hewlett Packard and Spirae. Avista's portion of the matching funds will be $12.9 million.

Less than a month after it handed out $3.4 billion in stimulus grants to utilities working toward a cleaner, more efficient electrical grid, the U.S. Department of Energy says it is doling out another $620 million to projects working on demonstration-scale Smart Grid technologies. Baltimore Gas& Electric (BG&E), armed with a $200 million Smart Grid stimulus grant, took its case before the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) and outlined its plans to lower operating costs, help the environment and offer incentives to reduce demand.

Sacramento State, along with partners, received a $127.5 million federal stimulus grant to improve Sacramento’s electric grid as part of the Smart Sacramento project first introduced in September.
Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, a supporter of the Smart Sacramento project, announced Oct. 27 the grant given to fund the local smart grid energy project, a joint venture among the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Sac State, California Department of General Services and Los Rios Community College District.
The grant was made available by Matsui and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The previous month witnessed the continuing momentum of smart meter and smart grid development in the United States and the UK. Concerns were also raised advising caution against speeding up massive installations in light of security concerns or other technological shortcomings.
The Obama administration reaffirmed its commitment to development of smart energy with the announcement of 100 grants worth $3.4 billion on October 27, money that came from the Economic Recovery Act passed in February of this year. CenterPoint Energy, based in Houston, received the largest grant worth $200 million. The energy giant will put the money towards a $639 million project that will see 2.2 million smart meters and sensors installed.

Progress Energy has been awarded $200 million in federal stimulus money to create a smarter grid with a more efficient flow of electricity.
Progress Energy’s Smart Grid grant application was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy this week for award negotiations as part of the federal stimulus package. The $200 million grant application proposes to use grant funds, combined with $320 million in matching dollars from Progress Energy, for several system and equipment upgrades in the Carolinas and Florida.

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree announced this morning that a federal Recovery Act grant of $96 million will be coming to Maine to help Central Maine Power provide “smart meters” for all 600,000 of its customers. Funding for the “Advanced Metering Infrastructure Project” will be matched by CMP, for a total project cost of nearly $200 million.
