The UK is a rich, stable country with oil and gas reserves, lots of wind, and more than enough scientists and engineers to make the most of its resources. So why do so many people in the country continue to tolerate high energy bills and poor service? The question of what can be done to encourage energy consumers to become more active and engaged has come to a head after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) published provisional findings from its investigation into the UK’s energy market.

A new survey by Accenture found that within the next five years, 57% of global energy consumers would be interested in solar panel or connected-home solution installation, as more people seek to lower their energy bills, increase energy efficiency, and further integrate technology into their lives. According to the survey, only 7% of energy consumers worldwide are currently interested in those options, meaning that there’s a lot of opportunity for solar and smart grid companies in the coming years.

The idea behind smart grids is to use information to improve the efficiencies and effectiveness of electrical power generation, transmission and distribution resources.

It’s easy to see why this makes sense for utilities.

By reducing electrical demand during times when resources are heavily taxed, the existing grid infrastructure can be used more efficiently, controlling costs for all while maximizing usable power for energy consumers.
