21. January 2016 · Comments Off on 3 factors that will impact the growth of IoT in healthcare · Categories: News · Tags: , , , ,

Here comes the Internet of Things ( IoT). Again. A year ago, I wrote a column here arguing that the IoT movement isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be, primarily because being able to connect “things” doesn’t make them an “Internet of Things.” I thought it would be a good time to revisit my position in light of all the press that IoT has been getting lately. Gartner has estimated that some 6.4 Billion connected things will be in use by the end of 2016, with some 5.5 million new things getting connected every day. This is a significant increase on their earlier estimate of 4.9 Billion connected things for 2015. Clearly a lot of connected things have come online and continue to come online. A further analysis reveals that over 60 percent of the connected things relate to the consumer goods industry, with the rest being split evenly between cross-industry devices such as light bulbs and industry specific devices such as hospital equipment. We have also seen an unexpected increase in buzz around driverless cars which are the biggest poster boys for the IoT movement today.

The lines between between industries as well as non-tech and tech companies continue to get blurrier and blurrier. With the ubiquity of cloud and big data, with the Internet of Things (IoT) becoming a hot commodity interwoven through it all, M&A activity has been buzzing nonstop. Companies with digital disruption stories — particularly IoT, big data analytics and cloud or Software as a Service — were the stars of the most recent quarter. In the process, non-tech companies continued to get involved in tech in a deeper way. At the same time, tech providers were shifting away from products to end-to-end services. That’s the finding of EY’s latest review of global M&A activity. Overall, the consultancy tracked a total of 1,069 deals in the third quarter of 2015 (July-September). The amount of deals set the second-highest all-time record for any quarter since 2000. The data is based on EY’s analysis of The 451 Group M&A KnowledgeBase data for 2014 and 2015.

What tech defines the Internet of Things (IoT) and who are the major IoT tech players? These are the topics of countless articles and images attempting to qualitatively define and illustrate the IoT phenomenon. I just bought an Amazon Echo ($179) and I must say this is the first time I have felt as though the Internet of Things (IoT) has begun to realize its promise in a way that the general public can understand. It’s not perfect, but it has all the earmarks of what the IoT will one day be. And it will grow.Echo is a voice-activated IoT device that performs a variety of functions, including playing music, answering questions (using voice synthesis) based on Internet searches, and serving as a hub for the control of home automation IoT devices on your WLAN. You speak to it, using the attention word “Alexa” (or “Amazon,” your choice) and (relatively) natural language to begin your command or ask a question. The device itself simply performs speech-to-text conversion, sending the text to a cloud server for analysis and response determination. Its response comes in the form of synthesized speech. The recent user review below provides an excellent series of examples of what Echo can (and sometimes cannot) do.
