Some entity will come to own the business of residential cybersecurity, network monitoring and remote managed services, but it’s unclear who that might be.It could be big home security dealers or central monitoring stations like ADT, commercial IT managed service providers like Accenture, cable companies like Comcast/Xfinity, electronics superstores like Best Buy/Magnolia, DIY networking companies like Eero or possibly, just possibly … home automation integrators, aka the “CEDIA channel.”

Tech companies like Google and Apple seem like they’re trying to do just about everything, from helping you watch cat videos to driving your car for you. Soon, they may also help you protect your house from burglars.According to a note on home-security firm ADT from Citi, Silicon Valley-backed security systems that are self-installed and self-monitored are going to become the new norm for home security.Currently, there are three types of home security on the market. The industry giants run traditional professionally installed and monitored systems, like what ADT offers and telecoms such as Comcast and AT&T have begun to roll out. These represent 93% of the home-security market, says Citi.

ADT (NYSE: ADT), the giant of professionally installed security and home automation systems, is diving deep into DIY with a new smart camera, made by LG, that serves as a complete smart home hub with Z-Wave, ZigBee, Bluetooth Smart (BLE) and Wi-Fi built in, plus the potential for adding cellular communications.It might sound a little like Piper, the smart camera with a Z-Wave home-automation hub inside, but the new product (not yet named), co-developed by LG and ADT, is much more robust.

Tech companies, energy retailers, service providers, utilities and investors make up just a fraction of the diverse set of industries clamoring to enter the home energy market, according to new research from GTM Research.

A growing list of blue-chip vendors, including Apple, ADT, Google (after it acquired Nest), Samsung, Verizon, and Wal-Mart, are entering the arena — already crowded with solar, security, telecom and energy providers — by partnering with incumbent hardware and software providers to develop home internet-of-things ecosystems to usher in a new phase of home energy management solutions.
