Greater use of open automated demand response (OpenADR) has the potential to help utilities and independent system operators (ISOs) manage the electricity grid during a period of growing use of renewable energy, as long as the technology is fully understood, Automated Buildings reports.

According to the news source, OpenADR gives companies an opportunity to use an open and standardized platform to share demand response event and price information through wireless communications. If implemented correctly, it can help utilities develop new ways of shifting high electricity loads by communicating with an industrial customer through improved networks. In OpenADR, a utility can send a request to a building to prepare for a load event, or to inform it of a change in electricity prices.
