The California Public Utilities Commission approved rules Tuesday forbidding investor-owned utilities like San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Southern California Edison from giving out customer data from smart meters without customer consent.

Utilities have been replacing old-school rotary electric meters with computerized devices since 2008. Nearly all residents in San Diego and Southwest Riverside County now have the newer meters. But the meters have run into stiff opposition in some parts of the state, in part over privacy concerns.
