Regulatory officials in California and Maine are either considering, or already permitting options, for electric consumers to choose whether they have a wireless radio installed and operating in their smart meters. Each case is based primarily on the perception that radio frequency (RF) signals from wireless communicating smart meters would cause irreparable harm to human tissue. While this heightened concern is being debated, and mostly disproven under current scientific facts and industry testing, we should focus on the longer-term impact such regulatory direction may be setting for future smart grid deployment.
