Alabama Power Co. blames a spike in complaints about the company’s new smart meters on bad timing, but the Alabama Public Service Commission is checking to make sure it is not more than that.
The electric utility installed a few of the new meters as early as 2005 as a pilot project. It began full-scale installation in 2008 and has put up more than 900,000 of the devices, according to spokesman Michael Sznajderman.
