Smart power use among issues facing SDG&E boss – SignOnSanDiego.com

I think it’s actually not that far off. We’re doing, already on the smart-grid side; we have a microgrid pilot that we’re putting in place right now in Borrego. The technology for a lot of this is there. Honestly, it’s a lot of the policy, because this works when you get smart meters in and you can give customers real-time information based upon what the true costs are at the time you’re using, or the time you’re generating. So I think the technology is not the issue. … Battery technology is an issue, but that is developing and I think it will happen very quickly, now that it’s seen that there’s a real need, that distributed generation is going to happen, and I do believe that it’s going to happen. There’s going to be more of a focus on the battery-technology development.

Our home had a Smart Meter installed on 2-23-2010 and we were not home, but we had everything shutoff anyway. On the 24th my wife went to use our electric oven in baking and then switched it over to self-clean mode. Then the oven responded a beeping and displayed an F-9 error code. We checked this out with an appliance tech regarding our problem, which according to him the (F-9) error code means the main Electronic Control Module has gone bad.

He stated that many of his customers lately have experienced similar issues after having their meters replaced by SDG&E. He said the ECM’s are sensitive electronics and he believes that a power spike or surge occurs as the primary cause of failure when the meters are replaced.

Has this issue been brought up and looked at by SDG&E?

What is being done to help the customers?

Our free-standing oven is 5 years old and will cost about $500.00 to repair, so we will be purchasing a new one for about $600.00.
