A quarter of a century after Apple’s iconic Macintosh computers advert premiered during the Super Bowl in the US, General Electric launched a Super Bowl ad it hoped would symbolise another technological revolution – the smart grid.

GE’s smart grid ad features an animated scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz atop electrical infrastructure and dangling by wires singing If I only had a brain.
