Southern California Edison (SCE) is installing smart electric meters throughout the San Gabriel Valley as part of the Edison SmartConnect program, which will help customers save energy and money. SCE customers in parts of Montebello, Alhambra, East Los Angeles, El Monte, Monterey Park, Industry, Rosemead, San Gabriel, Pico Rivera and Whittier will be receiving the new meters through the spring of 2010.

A quarter of a century after Apple’s iconic Macintosh computers advert premiered during the Super Bowl in the US, General Electric launched a Super Bowl ad it hoped would symbolise another technological revolution – the smart grid.

TechNet, the bipartisan political network of CEOs that promotes the growth of the innovation economy, today released a new poll that found that wide majorities of the American people support their utilities offering more technologies for home energy management and smart metering which are key parts of creating a national energy Smart Grid.
“The American people strongly support cutting-edge innovations to help them save money on their energy bills and change their electricity consumption,” said Jim Hawley, Acting CEO of TechNet.

It seems like Copenhagen is the place to be in terms of smart grid and green technology news. Not only is the company the “greenest” city in Europe, but, with the Copenhagen climate conference underway, it seemed the city was doing its best to control emissions in the area.

A Smart Grid is about balancing existing power resources plus a model for how future power resources can be planned.
Let us take a city which is not yet Smart in terms of their power requirements.
They will have to produce power to meet their peak demand. This means they will be producing power which may be wasted during non peak times. The goal is to use the wasted power and increase the productivity of the city.
“Smart Grids: An Introduction,” is a report published by the Department of Energy, or “DOE,” to introduce U.S. consumers to the goals, benefits and smart technology underpinning the multi-billion dollar government smart grid investments planned for the coming decade. The report lays out, in simple terms, the state of the grid, its vulnerabilities and a path forward. It differentiates between what it refers to as a smarter grid, which is based on technology that exists now and can be deployed in the near term, and a smart grid, which will be highly intelligent, immense in scope and ubiquitous in deployment.

Among the tech giants supplying solutions that address climate change is SAP. Recently the company announced its participation in the Smart City Project – what will eventually become a large network of low-carbon communities all around the world. Other companies participating in Smart City include Sharp, Nikken Sekkei Ltd, Hewlett-Packard Japan, Mitsui Fudosan, e-Solutions Inc., and the Future Design Center Incorporated Association (FDC) in Japan.
Axion Power International (AXPM), based in New Castle, Pennsylvania, has developed and patented a battery storage system called PbC® that promises to be an important piece of the future smart grid. The device has already won a Frost & Sullivan Technology Award for North America.
Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), the largest power distributor in the Philippines, is seeking ways to improve operational performance. Siemens believes its smart grid solutions are just what Meralco needs.
The words “self healing grid” are an instant lure, but grid experts would be happier if we stopped throwing the term around. What actually happens is lighter on the magic, heavier on the helpful.
Here’s an issue that I think will greatly effect startups building the next-generation of home energy management tools over the next couple of months: Many utilities won’t be turning on the wireless communication chips (most often the wireless standard ZigBee) in their smart meters until well into 2010, and it will be a very controlled process. Some utilities will have ZigBee chips disabled throughout the months of installation and then plan to enable all of the ZigBee functionality in one go, potentially upgrading the meters with the latest software.

Introduced as the industry’s smallest, a new dual buck (step-down) regulator for space-constrained portable electronic systems has been unveiled by Analog Devices (ADI)… The high level of integration and small package size enables a cost-effective, ultra-small, power management unit for portable instruments, smart energy meters, smart phones and other power-sensitive equipment that requires thin packages…

Pepco got the green light from D.C. to use stimulus funds to smarten its power grid – the last regulatory hurdle it needed to clear before work can start on the project.
In late October, the Department of Energy awarded the D.C.-based utility $44.6 million in stimulus money to install “smart meters” in D.C. The devices at households delineate exactly when and how power is being used.
